Y'know, I was just thinking how my gallery could use some more color. So here's my Black and White project.

We had to illustrate (another) news article, this one was about how corporations are recruiting peer representatives to appeal to college kids. Yes the target is on the wrong eye, shhh it serves the comp better.

I'm decently happy with the linework (aside from squeezing the guy and the dog too close together), but rendering was A TIME. I forgot I don't necessarily draw things that make sense in space. Probably not using this style again. Learned a bunch, as always.

Posting this at 12:36, taking this to critique at 3. Anyone with a good idea for a fix before then gets to be my best friend forever.

The characterizations are completely gorgeous. I particularly love the way you've drawn the face of the guy on the left. There's such a great sense of movement in the gestures of the subjects, and there's a real control over the delicate cross-hatch you've got going on. This is a totally solid and marvelous drawing.

lol sorry. one of my best mates in primary school was a lefty and we always sat on the same tables in classes (all tables were tables for two in australia-land) and it took us WAY TOO LONG to figure out i should sit on the right and he on the left so we didnt bump elbows while writing/drawing.
I are clever hooman.
out of curiosity, what handed are you?

I am also boring right-handed. Many people ask if i'm a lefty, and say its weird that I'm not, because apparently lefties are meant to be more artistically oriented.

This picture is great by the by. His EAR! I love his ear most of all. And the teeth, but that goes without saying.

Hmm, I actually like how the guy and the dog are really close. It could show how corporations are "worming" their way into the education system.

That works. I did try to not take a side with this cos the article doesn't, but I reckon my default-perturbed expressions kind of lean it a certain way anyway.

I love this style. All the hatching looks superb over your style, which I usually see rendered in flats or simple, textureless shading. I agree about adding a little more definition to the girl's face, but must stress ONLY A LITTLE. Its really easy to go overboard on ladyfaces and make them look older or masculine. Just a little corner of a nostril and some more mouth detail would make it perfect.
I love that dog face though. With that wrinkly mouth and beady little eyes, soo cuuutteee

Gooooosssh damn, Rachel. Thankyou! I got really proud of that shading... once I saw how some people kind of rushed theirs, but hey.

That's the whole reason I didn't try to shade her, haha. Thanks for the ideas on where, though, I was just going to try to abuse her cheekbones more.

I love this! I was going to say that making the line weight of the three foreground characters a little darker would help them pop out, but your original may already have that. DA has this weird way of slightly lightening everything I post on it, especially my pencils, so that may be what I'm seeing here.

Amazing job on the concept, I think it really gets the idea across

I don't think DA lightened it, but you did make me compare what I posted to the physical one and I did post a pretty light version. Darkened it up! Thank you!

Love how this looks, your pencil work is simply delectable. In my personal opinion, though... I do think the girl needs some more shadows on her face, like just a bit on her cheek. Her face right now is such a huge white shape I feel it almost competes with the dogs face since his also makes a huge white shape. I think the guy on the left is fine though, he looks like he has enough shading.

Also I don't expect you to edit this part since it would be too difficult given the time you have and because you've already shaded everything, but...I think the girls neck is rather masculine.I feel it's too thick and the way it's rendered makes it look rather muscular, uh, not that girls can't be muscular. Her right shoulder also lines up a bit oddly with her neck, I think. It might just be the way the dog overlaps her, I'm not entirely sure.

I think everything else looks fine though. Love how the dog came out and your cross hatching looks great :)

Your points on the girl sound great. I was thinking of just hatching in her whole face, mostly, with something light like a 3H. She should definitely get pushed further back. Thankyou!

Darker darks in the background would help the people in the foreground stand out a little more. The desk behind them being the same value as the shirts/people in the back makes it a bit difficult to parse depth at a quick glance. The directional hatching looks awesome, though. It really helps everything come together and gives a sense of volume and weight for the different materials.
